James Mackay is a documentary photographer based in Burma and the UK.
He graduated from Central St Martins College of Art & Design in London and has worked extensively in Burma, mostly undercover, undertaking a number of long-term projects documenting humanitarian and political issues in the military controlled country and in particular the issue of Burma's political prisoners.
In November 2011 his long term project documenting Burma's political prisoners was published as the limited edition book "Abhaya: Burma's Fearlessness" featuring a foreword by Aung San Suu Kyi.
His work has been exhibited in New York, London, Bangkok and Washington DC and recognised with numerous awards including as an Open Society Foundations grantee in 'Moving Walls 19'.
It has been featured in films, books and by a number of leading publications and human rights organisations including TIME, Newsweek, The New York Times, The Independent, Le Monde, The Guardian, VOGUE, Dazed & Confused, Human Rights Watch & Amnesty International.
